Along the caravan routes in The Southern Arabian
Peninsula lies the land of ancient Sabean kingdom, better known to the
Romans as Arabia Felix.
Frankincense, myrrh, silks and spices were
traded here as well as ivory, gold, copper and precious stones.
The jewelry that originated from here were
almost exclusively silver and their designs date back to ancient times
with some innovations along the way and until mid 20 Th century they we
important part of the Arabian culture and primary constitute of Bedouin
woman's dowry.
Today mass produced gold jewelry has replaced
the role of silver and most Bedouins are city dwellers. The famous
Yemeni Jewish silversmiths had left Yemen and once highly developed
skill of family silver smithing passed from father to son has nearly
entirely disappeared from the peninsula.
